You can’t take the yarn from me!

Yes, the intent is that you sing that to the theme of Firefly.

So, ThinkGeek has decided to donate all of their proceeds from the sale of the Jayne hat on their website to Can’t Stop the Serenity, a Browncoat Charity that supports Equality Now.

What is this all about? Buzzfeed can sum it up better than I ever could, but the summary is this: “Firefly, a short-lived “space western” TV show created by Joss Whedon, aired for four months in 2002 before it was cancelled by the Fox Broadcasting Company. The show developed a passionate fan base, known collectively as “Browncoats.” Jayne Cobb receives a distinctive yellow and orange hat in a package from his mother. Jayne, a gun-happy tough guy, is very pleased with the handmade hat and wears it throughout the episode.”

It’s a very cunning hat, especially on the Hero of Canton.

Browncoats banded together in their love of the hat – knitting them, and eventually selling them online. Then FOX got mad and was like all “RAWR!” and Browncoats are all “CURSE YOUR SUDDEN BUT INEVITABLE BETRAYAL!”

Seriously, read the Buzzfeed link for the story.

For those of you that haven’t heard about the going’s on NOW, this was on the ThinkGeek page for the beloved hat:

UPDATE 4/11 4:23pm ET: So, we got Fillioned.

Nathan Fillion tweeted a link to our blog post about our Jayne Hat donation to Can’t Stop the Serenity (thank you, Nathan!) and our blog couldn’t handle the traffic, taking the whole site down with it (thank you, Nathan?). For now, we’re directing traffic from that post to this more stable page. The content of the blog post follows:

Browncoats, we hear your concerns about the cease and desist on Etsy Jayne Hat sellers!

We weren’t involved in that process, but we have reached out to FOX and we’ve definitely heard what you’ve had to say. (We know you guys have Vera to back you up.)

As a result, we’ve decided to donate the profits from all Jayne Hat sales on our site to Can’t Stop the Serenity, a Browncoat charity dear to ThinkGeek’s heart that raises funds and awareness in support of Equality Now. We’ll continue making that donation until we run out of stock of Jayne Hats.

We hope the Hero of Canton himself would approve.
That’s right, Firefly fans. FOX went ahead and issued a cease and desist on all the Etsy sellers that were selling Jayne Hats. Really? Really?? Because this was such a HUUUUUGE issue that FOX had to get in the middle of mucking stuff up that’s been going on for 10 years, only to get people riled up anyway.

Anyway, if you feel so inclined, and don’t have a crafty friend that can knit one up for you, I recommend you purchase this one through ThinkGeek.

On a completely unrelated note, where did I put my knitting needles….? I’m off to make a Jayne hat for me and a friend!
